Not that I want to start a political debate because that isn't the reason I started this blog but I do have to point out something about John McCain's new VP pick, Sarah Palin: she is into censorship!
Here is a quote from an article about her:
"Shortly after becoming mayor, former city officials and Wasilla residents
said, Ms. Palin approached the town librarian about the possibility of
banning some books, though she never followed through and it was unclear
which books or passages were in question.
Ann Kilkenny, a Democrat who said she attended every City Council meeting
in Ms. Palins first year in office, said Ms. Palin brought up the idea of
banning some books at one meeting. They were somehow morally or socially
objectionable to her, Ms. Kilkenny said.
The librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, pledged to resist all efforts at
censorship, Ms. Kilkenny recalled. Ms. Palin fired Ms. Emmons shortly
after taking office but changed course after residents made a strong show
of support." (full article "Palins Start in Alaska: Not Politics as Usual" http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Net-Gold/message/24943)
If I wasn't a librarian, I still do not think she is right. Even if she suggested that "conversations about banning books were rhetorical", the fact that she SUGGESTED it makes me think that she has no problem with it!
I have a real problem with people wanting to remove books from libraries. If you don't want your child to read something, that is your choice but you don't have the right to decide for everyone else.
Okay, I said what I had to say. I will try to stay away from future posts that deal with politics. I do not want to start a debate on this.
